Hulk boosts Porto, Benfica chase on

(PA) Sunday 16 January 2011

Two goals from Hulk helped Porto maintain their eight-point advantage over Benfica at the top of the Liga table as they beat Naval 3-1.

Falcao gave Porto the lead in the 44th minute and Hulk improved it before the break to put the home side in total control. Hulk completed his brace in the 53rd minute, with a late Kevin Gomis penalty getting Naval on the scoresheet.

An early goal from Javier Saviola helped Benfica keep the pressure on, albeit from afar, as they won 1-0 at Academica. The Argentina forward netted after just 18 minutes, and, once Academica had lost Pape Habib Sow to a 35th-minute red card, the contest was effectively over, even despite Fabio Coentrao`s last-gasp red for Benfica.

Beira Mar enjoyed a fine 3-0 win at sixth-placed Uniao Leiria to move to within a point of their opponents. Carlos Ronny gave them an early lead, before late goals from Moreira Artur and Wang Gang wrapped things up.

Diego Barcelos scored 14 minutes from the end to give Nacional a 1-0 win over Rio Ave and Maritimo won 4-2 at Vitoria Setubal. Sidnei Dos Reis gave them a 25th-minute lead, cancelled out by Claudio Pitbull ten minutes later. But a five-minute second-half brace from Baba Diawara but Maritimo back in control and Joao Guilherme made things safe before Pitbull`s late consolation.
